Shahnawaz's story

When Shahnawaz joined our Higher Level and Degree Apprenticeship programme in 2019 we were immediately struck by his drive and motivation. He was studying for his Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Construction & the Built Environment and A-Level Maths qualifications and came to us with a career goal in mind, to be a Quantity Surveyor. Shahnawaz immediately threw himself into all the opportunities the Trust had to offer.

We helped secure work experience for Shahnawaz with Sir Robert McAlpine, which consolidated his passion for his chosen career. He took full advantage of the opportunity to learn from the professionals he met about possible routes into Quantity Surveying, and what day-to-day life is like in the role.

“The reason why I want to do Quantity Surveying is that it involves a lot of problem solving and collaboration. I feel like I have both those skills, and to improve these I am currently doing Quantity Surveying work experience with Sir Robert McAlpine.”

On our Higher Level and Degree Apprenticeship programme Shahanawaz was extremely self-motivated, attending three out of the four mock assessment centres that the Trust delivered with the support of employer partners Keltbray, Sir Robert McAlpine, Tideway, Morgan Sindall and BAM Nuttall. The mock assessment centres are a great opportunity for young people to meet likeminded students, young apprentices and potential employers, preparing them for the recruitment process by giving them a sense of the skills employers are looking for.

As part of the programme the Trust also offers 1-1 advice and guidance throughout the application process, including up-to-date information about opportunities in the sector and support with writing and reviewing applications. Shahanwaz took full advantage of these resources, and was really proactive when working with his Trust contact to develop a clear plan of action for his studies and applications.

“I enjoy seeing the financial side of a construction project come together, and how changes are managed and sustained – that tends to be a challenge which I like!”

Over the course of the year, Shahawaz completed 11 applications for Higher Level and Degree Apprenticeships. Izzy worked closely with Shahnawaz throughout his time on the Higher Level and Degree Apprenticeship programme and has been incredibly impressed with his upbeat attitude as he seized every opportunity presented to him with both hands and learned from each experience.

We are thrilled to say that Shahnawaz’s dedication has paid off, and he has now secured a Degree Apprenticeship in Quantity Surveying with Laing O'Rourke! We look forward to watching him flourish in his new role going forward, he is truly an inspiring young man.

UPDATE: We caught up with Shahnawaz in January 2021 to see how his apprenticeship is going!

Here is what he had to say:

What is the best bit of your day?

I enjoy going out on site and working in the office as I am learning about and managing the costs of various important aspects of the project as I progress.

Is there a project you’ve worked on that you’re particularly proud of?

The Olympia Redevelopment Project has been a great experience for me so far as I believe my involvement from the beginning to date has benefited the company in trying to telegraph, reduce, and understand the different costs and charges to the project.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?

Never give up on any application you make and do it with the intention of making a change. You never know, out of 15 applications, you may get rejected by 14, but that 1 company will value you for you and before you know it, you will be working towards your dream. Take every chance you are given so you don’t look back on missed opportunities.
