Case study: Emmanuel Folorunso

Emmanuel joined us as a self-referral in October 2021, after wanting to pursue a career in construction, with a particular interest in getting into mechanical engineering in the future. He was seeking training or work opportunities but was unsure how to access the sector, so he joined our Southwark targeted support programme and soon started our partnership programme with Niblock.

Alongside Emmanuel, four other young people took part in the eight-week employment readiness programme delivered in partnership with Niblock. Following the programme, Niblock were looking to offer one young person a yearlong contract to join the team as a General Site Operative, with a view to offer a lengthy career thereafter. This was part of their newly awarded renovation and major refurbishment scheme of nine hostels into self-contained affordable apartments.

Throughout the eight-week programme Emmanuel worked closely with his Construction Youth Trust coach and Niblock professionals on various employability sessions such as CV writing, where he was able to discover what employers were really looking for and build his CV! He also had the opportunity to participate in a mock interview, which enabled him to understand the kind of questions employers ask and perfect his interview technique. Skills that were about to come in very handy!

Emmanuel – Construction Youth Trust has helped kickstart my career in the construction industry by educating me about the industry. Whilst doing so, they have helped me with my health and safety Level 1 and my CSCS card. They also provided the opportunity to work permanently for Niblock where I have been working for over a month. It has been challenging but very insightful and fun. I can’t wait to see how my career develops.

Emmanuel was offered to interview for Niblock’s General Site Operative opportunity. Through our bursary scheme we were able to provide Emmanuel with a smart outfit for his interview. Niblock were incredibly impressed with Emmanuel’s interview and offered him the job as a General Site operative job! We caught up with Emmanuel and were delighted to hear how he was enjoying his new role and how much he was learning!
