Our Lambeth young people try their hand at block paving on-site!

As part of our targeted support programme in Lambeth, generously funded by The Walcot Foundation, we took our young people across to Southwark Construction Skills Centre to get a taste of on-site construction work and explore block paving techniques.

The action-packed day started with an introduction from Sam, the Centre Manager at the Skills Centre. Sam spoke to the young people about her journey into construction and how hard work and determination helped her overcome barriers to get to where she is now.

The young people were then joined by Kevin, a Site Apprentice, who facilitated the block paving session. It was incredibly beneficial for them to hear from a relatable industry volunteer who was able to offer practical knowledge on what the day-to-day role of an apprentice entails.

“He (industry volunteer) was really patient with us and showed us how to do the work correctly” –  young person

The participants threw themselves into the block paving task and it was fantastic to see them not only learning a new trade but also working together as a team to complete a task diligently. 15 minutes into the session, one of the young people jubilantly yelled out “I love this!” – we believe he spoke for all our young people, as they all showed appreciation for being able to take part in an engaging activity like this.

To wrap up the day, we were joined by Duane, the Site Employment Manager. He helped our young people to consider their next steps as he introduced a variety of career routes in construction and available positions open to them. The effect of this kind of activity was evident, as 75% of all participants reported that their knowledge of careers in construction & the built environment had improved following the session.

“I had a call from a parent on Monday morning asking, if there were any practical sessions this week too and that he wanted to thank me for organising a practical session for his son. This was nice to hear. I had a great time and look forward to organising more practical sessions for my young people” – Rebecca Dublin, Construction Youth Trust Delivery lead

Thank you to all out volunteers from Southwark Construction Skills Centre for their support in running such an engaging day for our young people. We look forward to continuing to work with the participants and preparing them to take on their next steps!
