Construction Youth Trust in Wales recently joined forces with Pre-Vent in Ebbw Vale with an Engagement Gateway project to support their job club aimed at helping disadvantaged young people who were struggling to get into work.
The 14-19 year olds are either in care, care leavers or have disabilities, and the job club provides them with an alternative learning pathway which they find much easier to engage with.
The young people looked at how to fill out application forms and the difference between a job specification and person specification. Most of them hadn’t had the opportunity to see an application form before and weren’t aware of the requirements to apply for a job so this gave them a real head start on the search for work. The club also practiced interview skills and were given hints and tips on what employers in the industry would be looking for as well as taking part in group activities and role play.
Claire Gardner from Pre-Vent said 'the sessions were extremely engaging and thoroughly enjoyed by all of the young people involved. They got a lot out of the sessions as they had the opportunity to really express themselves. We would recommend Construction Youth Trust to our partners as they work extremely well with young people ensuring that they are at the centre of delivery and are able to adapt to suit the needs of the group.’
The project was such a success that Construction Youth Trust and Pre-Vent joined forces again to provide another construction activity workshop which provided a more hands-on insight into a what a career in construction would be like for more young people. Emma Bull from Willmott Dixon attended the job club as a guest speaker and commented 'It was a great opportunity to see the young people getting actively involved in experiencing a construction trade and also the importance of teamwork which is integral to working on a construction site. I had a chat with a few of them to see what their ambitions were and to pass on some top tips to hopefully see them one day on a Willmott Dixon site!
