Case Study- Kazim

We first met Kazim in 2021 when he joined our Year 13 coaching programme, generously funded by The Greater London Authority’s Working Integration Network. Kazim is an extremely driven young person with a passion and keen interest in civil engineering. Through the coaching programme, he has been able to access industry opportunities in his field of interest.

Over the academic year Kazim worked closely with his Construction Youth Trust coach to achieve his goal of securing an apprenticeship. During his 1-2-1 sessions, Kazim and his coach discussed his next steps, and we were delighted to enroll him on our laptop loan scheme to support him in his studies.

“Construction Youth Trust gave me the key skills and qualities to get a degree apprenticeship. With 1-2-1 improvement tracking and regular work experience provided, I was given the best opportunity to show employers my best self.”

Kazim was also given the opportunity to work with Christina, a volunteer mentor from Wates Group. Kazim showed an incredible amount of engagement and enthusiasm during his mentoring with Christina, so much so that he managed to secure a work experience placement!

Kazim impressed the team at Wates Group during his work experience, which culminated in the delivery of a presentation showcasing everything he had learnt over the week. The team are sure that Kazim will have a bright future in the industry!

“I have participated in numerous online work experiences due to Covid-19, but it makes such a difference being able to work in person and develop key skills and connections I wouldn’t have made online. I have enjoyed working with the team during my week at Wates.”

Throughout the programme, Kazim attended a number of our Live Vacancies sessions, which are  designed to connect industry employers with aspiring young talent. Kazim attended a Live Vacancies day hosted by Skanska which included a range of talks, workshops, and task-based activities. Shuna Baggaley, Skanska's Community, Stakeholder & Social Value Manager spoke about her wonderful experience meeting Kazim at the session:

“Kazim was noted for being an attentive, engaging, and communicative individual. He showed a genuine interest in engineering, and he asked the presenters some pertinent and challenging questions. As a result of the workshop, Kazim chose to apply for the Skanska Apprentice Scheme. He did well in the initial online interviews, and he was successfully selected to attend the apprentice assessment centre in May. Kazim presented himself consistently well throughout the assessment day. We were delighted to see his progress and development from the workshop through to interview stage. In his one-to-one interview, he responded articulately and confidently to the questions, and we are very excited that he has accepted the offer of an apprentice position with Skanska at IPC Euston. Well done, Kazim!”

The Live Vacancies sessions enabled Kazim to gain a greater understanding of higher level and degree apprenticeships, and we were delighted when Kazim secured a Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship with Skanska.

We were thrilled to welcome Kazim at one of our Board of Trustees meetings where he reflected on his experiences over the coaching programme. It was a pleasure to work with Kazim as he took on every opportunity offered to him, not only the Live Vacancies sessions but also three site visits and a mock assessment centre. We wish him the best of luck in his exciting new chapter as an apprentice!
