Wired for Success: James’ Journey from College to Electrical Apprenticeship

Read about how James discovered new opportunities

At the age of 18 from Haringey, James was committed to securing an apprenticeship before he left college but faced challenges in finding opportunities. Through our Building Opportunities programme, James was able to explore various apprenticeship pathways in the construction and the built environment sector.

James’s CYT coach taught him where and how to access apprenticeships, and sent him opportunities for him to apply for. His coach also helped to enhance his employability skills through various sessions, including crafting a CV, practising mock interviews, teaching him how to carry himself in an interview, and providing opportunities to network with volunteers. James learnt how write appropriately for different audiences and how to network; he was not shy to ask important questions to volunteers. These new skills built his confidence significantly, preparing him for interview scenarios.

Reflecting on his experience, James thought:

  • “The professionalism session I did with my coach helped me know how to conduct myself in an interview”
  • James took part in our Level 1 Health and Safety course. Astonishingly, he passed the first time and answered every question correctly. Through this course, he was ready to gain his CSCS card, opening further possibilities for him.

James’s progress is testimonial to his positive attitude, as his CYT coach noted while he was networking with volunteers:

  • “James was eager to get his apprenticeship, I was impressed by his courage when he asked the hiring manager insightful questions”
  • His CYT coach put him forward for an exciting apprenticeship in electrical installation which he applied and interviewed for at Pure Energy Group. Harnessing the skills and confidence that he had learnt with his coach, James left a great impression with the team and was offered the apprenticeship and has already secure his CSC card! He has been working there since early March this year.

James’s determination for success paid off. We look forward to supporting him further through his journey!
