Rebuilding confidence: Raez’s journey into a Project Management apprenticeship
Read about how Raez found his passion for community planning
Raez, 19, from Southwark, experienced a loss of confidence during his final years at school after struggling to secure an apprenticeship. This setback affected his motivation and sense of direction. Through our Building Opportunities programme, we connected him with a CYT coach to help him regain focus and re-engage with his goal of entering the construction and built environment sector.
Following work experience placements at school, Raez had initially set his sights on a career in Quantity Surveying. Through consistent one-to-one employability coaching, he worked closely with his CYT coach to pursue this ambition. However, as their discussions progressed, it became clear that Raez was particularly passionate about community development – creating high-quality spaces where people can live, learn and thrive. His coach therefore helped him to broaden his search to role that combined his interest in finance with his desire to make a positive social impact, such as Project Management.
His coach identified an apprenticeship in Project Management with Southwark Council that strongly aligned with Raez’s values and aspirations, and supported him to refine his CV, clearly articulate his strengths, and build confidence in presenting his skills. They tailored his application and interview preparation specifically to Southwark Council, reviewing its mission and practising responses using the STAR technique to strengthen his performance.
Although Raez applied for several apprenticeships in Quantity Surveying and Project Management to maximise his chances, he was delighted to receive an offer for the Level 4 Project Management apprenticeship with Southwark Council! We are proud to have supported him in rebuilding his confidence and securing a role that genuinely reflects his ambitions. Raez has since moved into the Planning and Growth department of Southwark council, and has reached out to liaise on projects between Southwark council’s partners and CYT. We can’t wait to support him further with progressing in his role!
