Gershon was looking for career ideas

Read about how Gershon discovered his options

Gershon joined our Building Opportunities programme at the age of 18. He was unemployed and looking to get into the industry but didn’t want to go to university and was unclear of his options.

  • “I wanted to know more information about construction as I was already interested but didn’t know what role I wanted to do.”
  • Through our programme, Gershon was able to spend time on construction sites experiencing the various roles and trades in action to see what he liked. He was also connected to a variety of industry professionals who could answer his questions and share their insights.

  • “I wanted to do an apprenticeship because you learn and get paid at the same time.”
  • Gershon found himself drawn to roles in customer service – a discipline he had enjoyed in previous work experience. He felt he had the personal skills required and enjoyed liaising with customers and contractors as well as taking responsibility for administrative tasks. Spending time on site talking with a volunteer who works in customer service further cemented his interest.

Gershon then completed a customer service course, and his CYT coach helped him develop a compelling CV. He was now well-placed to begin his search for work.

Amid applications, Gershon was invited to celebrate the completion of our programme at a graduation ceremony organised by CYT and Lambeth Council – also attended by employers who had partnered with us on the programme. It was here that Gershon met one of the industry professionals he had previously spent time with on a work experience placement. The employer had been impressed with Gershon on his placement and was keen to know of his current aspirations. To Gershon’s delight, the major construction firm was recruiting for a customer service apprentice!

Gershon completed an application and was invited to interview. Clearly his enthusiasm and affinity shone through, and he was offered the role. He was absolutely delighted!

Congratulations Gershon – we wish you the best of luck in your future career!

Building Opportunities is an intensive coaching programme for disadvantaged young people who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) or at-risk of becoming NEET. Our programme targets the very hardest-to-reach and most vulnerable young people in our Lambeth hub and encourages them to take positive next steps towards rewarding work suited to their individual abilities and interests.
