From a Q&A to an Apprenticeship: Dominic’s Career Breakthrough
Read about how Dominic discovered his ideal apprenticeship role
At just 16, Dominic from Lewisham felt stuck. With limited opportunities to connect with employers and little guidance on how to apply for apprenticeships, building a professional future seemed out of reach. That changed when he joined our Pathways to Professional Careers programme.
Guided by his Construction Youth Trust coach, Charlie, Dominic began exploring new career paths and learning how to navigate the often complex apprenticeship application process. With Charlie’s support, Dominic sharpened his employability skills by practicing CV writing, crafting cover letters and professional emails, and learning how to present himself confidently in applications. These sessions didn’t just build his skills; they boosted his confidence.
We also helped Dominic close the networking gap by introducing him to professionals in the construction and built environment sector. A standout moment was his mock interview with a project director. It was an invaluable opportunity to face challenging questions and showcase his growing confidence. He even led parts of the conversation, asking thoughtful questions and articulating his passion for the industry with professionalism.
Dominic’s confidence continued to grow at our Careers Networking Q&A sessions, where he connected with professionals from across the construction industry. Speaking with volunteers gave him real insight into a variety of career paths and sparked a particular interest in project controls.
These experiences, combined with his improved communication skills, helped Dominic make a strong impression at the Turner & Townsend Live Vacancies event. Organised in partnership with Turner & Townsend, the event gave young people the opportunity to meet directly with their team, learn about current apprenticeship openings, and gain practical advice on how to stand out in the recruitment process.
Inspired by the opportunities on offer, Dominic applied for a project controls apprenticeship with Turner & Townsend. Throughout the application and interview process, he drew on everything he had learned from his sessions with Charlie and his experience at the Live Vacancies event. His preparation and professionalism impressed the team, and he was offered the apprenticeship!
We’re thrilled for Dominic and can’t wait to see his career go from strength to strength!
