From A levels to apprenticeship: Efosa paves his way to a career in construction
Read about how Efosa made the leap from classroom to construction site
Efosa, 18, from Haringey, began his A levels with the goal of applying to study finance or economics at university. While university seemed like the natural next step, he wanted to take the time to explore all his options and make sure it was the right choice for him. That opportunity came when he attended a recruitment assembly at his college and heard about Construction Youth Trust’s Pathways to Professional Careers programme. His curiosity was sparked, and he decided to sign up and see what else was out there.
Through the programme, Efosa had his first real introduction to the construction industry. He took part in site visits and had the chance to meet and speak with volunteers working across the sector. During one visit, he spoke to an apprentice site manager who shared what they enjoyed about the job and the apprenticeship experience. This conversation made a strong impression on Efosa. He began to seriously consider taking a more direct, hands-on route into the industry.
Efosa’s CYT coach recognised his strong mathematical and logical abilities and suggested quantity surveying as a possible career path. The idea clicked instantly. Soon after, Efosa attended one of our Live Vacancies Days, an employer-led event run in partnership with Turner & Townsend. It was there that he heard about their cost management apprenticeship, a role that brought together elements of finance and quantity surveying. It sounded like the perfect fit.
Efosa jumped at the opportunity and applied. Thanks to the interview skills he had gained through the programme, including the STAR technique, he felt well prepared. He performed brilliantly through each stage of the process and was thrilled to be offered the apprenticeship.
Efosa will begin his journey with Turner & Townsend in September 2025. We are so proud of his progress and cannot wait to see what the future holds for him.
Construction Youth Trust works in local communities across London and North Kent, targeting areas with a high proportion of low-income households and significant construction and regeneration.
Our Pathways to Professional Careers programme supports students (aged 16-18) interested in pursuing professional pathways, with a priority focus on those from disadvantaged backgrounds and underrepresented groups. Research shows that young people from well-off backgrounds are 80% more likely to be in a professional job. Pathways aims to level the apprenticeship playing field, helping young people overcome barriers and access rewarding higher-level and degree apprenticeship opportunities and professional careers.
