Willmott Dixon Interiors volunteer inspires at Grosvenor’s Annual Summer Fete taster day

On Sunday the 4th of September, Mr Simeon Legood, a Surveyor with Willmott Dixon Interiors, volunteered with the Construction Youth Trust team Wendy and Pearl during a taster session at an annual community event hosted by Grosvenor Estate in the grounds of our Bermondsey Construction Training Centre in the heart of Southwark.

Funded by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), the taster session is part of a volunteer program designed to raise awareness of opportunities within the constructon industry.

Conveniently situated between a local waffle company and a coconut shy, Construction Youth Trust’s stall enticed many young people to have a go at bricklaying! Our mini bricklaying kit dazzled and enthralled. Simeon, meanwhile, artfully engaged parents, carers and educators around our careers board, fostering much discussion about opportunities within the industry.

The most interesting result of the day was our ability to dispel pre-conceived ideas of what it is to work in the industry; one parent in particular was amazed to hear that the industry employs architects, geologists, lawyers and archeologists as well as bricklayers, plumbers and surveyors! Ann Smith, a teacher at Bishop Thomas Grant School in Lambeth said “I’m amazed, I had no idea!”

At the end of the day, Simeon said “I had a great day at the Bermondsey Fete. It was a pleasure to work with Construction Youth Trust and interact and speak about construction industry careers with people of various different ages within the local community.”

We are running the Budding Builders course on a regular basis and welcome young people from all London boroughs who are currently looking to gain a CSCS card, and find employment or training.
