Welcoming the future generation of Industry Professionals through work experience!

During their work experience placements with Morgan Sindall, our Lambeth based young people thoroughly enjoyed being welcomed as part of the team, developing their knowledge of the Construction Industry, and taking part in real-life tasks.

Generously funded by Greater London Authority’s Workforce Integration Network, three of our young people took part in a 5-day work experience with Morgan Sindall. Students began their experience with a site visit and studying blueprints, to familiarise themselves with the build and its different stages. Across the placement, the students were able to learn about a variety of roles, from quantity surveying to engineering.

Our young people were immersed in a diverse range of real-life tasks, equipping them with exciting new skills. When teamed up with the Quantity Surveyor, our young people helped to write up a contract for the build. Similarly, their time with the site Engineer allowed them to get stuck into marking out grid lines for a new part of the build that hadn’t been constructed yet. These tangible experiences are invaluable when young people are making decisions about what they want to pursue as a future career.

Across the 5 days students sat in meetings with both the commercial team and the client, which enabled them to understand the financial side of the project and how it ties into the planning for the build. Throughout the week students were able to gain an encompassing insight into the world of work and industry, opening up a whole host of new career opportunities.

“It was a great experience, I gained a lot of knowledge in a variety of fields, it is definitely the right industry for me!” – Student on Work Experience

Engaging weeks such as the one at Morgan Sindall allow young people to understand how organisations work and bring the construction and built environment industry life!

“It was a pleasure having students from Southbank UTC join us on site for their work experience. All students were really engaged and eager to learn all things construction. We are looking forward to having more students attend site for their work experience and kickstarting their careers in construction.”- Helen Ruddy, Morgan Sindall

A big thanks to Helen Ruddy for facilitating this wonderful opportunity to our young people and to all the volunteers who supported this experience.
