Young people from LeSoCo College learnt valuable construction skills throughout 2014 at our unique ‘pop up’ training facility. Not only have young people on our courses been taught a range of useful skills, they have also been given a chance to look at the construction industry in real life at sites in the borough.
We delivered introductory training from our training base in Southwark throughout 2014 to young people from the local area, working closely with employers in the borough and throughout London as well as the college to support young people to access the job opportunities that exist throughout the city.
The Trust started the first course of 2014 from our ‘pop-up’ training centre in Thurlow St, Southwark giving the students and beneficiaries the opportunity to work together on creating some much needed information boards for local horticultural charity New Leaf based in West Dulwich. In addition to this, both groups were given access by Lend Lease, a property and infrastructure company, to one of its key sites in Southwark, One the Elephant. Young people have been given a real insight into careers in the construction industry including exciting site visits, tours and inspirational talks by the Site Manager.
Over two days, up to 32 young people from Southwark visited the site and contributed to the design and construction of the display boards. Paul Archenoul, Plastering Lecturer at LeSoCo commented, “Volunteering is a great opportunity which enabled them to get out of the classroom environment and see for themselves how the skills they are learning are used in the industry.” London Manager for Construction Youth Trust, Stuart Hamilton, said, “This is not only an opportunity to learn skills but the site visits give a real taste for what a career in construction is like. We hope to see many more young people in Southwark benefitting from these courses.
