Through our targeted support programmes we work with young people to discover inspirational careers that raise their aspirations, help them reconnect with their school learning and explore alternative career pathways.
Over a sustained period of time – typically 3-12 months – we are able to create trusted relationships with young people, helping them to explore their interests and recognise their individual skills so we can provide the most effective personalised support.
Over the academic year 2019/20, we worked closely with a group of Year 10 students from our partnership schools Norwood and La Retraite, funded by the Walcot Foundation.
Each young person was assigned a Construction Youth Trust coach, and in regular 1-1 mentoring sessions, we created individual learning plans for each student. As well as mentoring support, students had the opportunity to take part in employer-led activities aimed at getting them inspired about their own abilities and opening their eyes to the different careers available to them.
We are thrilled that we will be continuing to work with the same group of young people over this academic year as part of our Year 11 mentoring scheme funded by the Mercers' Company. Building upon the work of last year, we will be focusing on developing the young people’s employability skills, identifying their next best step and supporting them to make a successful transition from school into the world of work.
We’re diving straight into the programme delivery to ensure that we do not lose the momentum gained and that these students will continue to have the opportunity to take part in a variety of one-to-one and group activities, ranging from meet-the-apprentice sessions to application coaching to facilitated work experience!
