Our live vacancies day with Skanska was designed to support our young people to discover what it would be like to work for the company and how to secure competitive apprenticeships through a range of talks, workshops, and task-based activities.
18 of our young people took part in a fantastic, jam-packed Live Vacancies Day, hosted by Skanska. The day kicked off with an introduction to the diverse range of current vacancies with a focus on giving our young people a deeper understanding of the apprenticeship opportunities. Skanska industry professionals were on hand to answer our young people’s questions who were brimming with passion and enthusiasm! Available roles included Civil Engineering, Procurement, Design Technology Solutions and Quantity Surveying, ranging from levels 2-6.
Highlighting Skanska’s aim to become Carbon Neutral by 2045, our young people took part in a discussion with an Environment Manager, exploring how the industry is trying to reduce its carbon footprint by making their practices more environmentally friendly and the new career paths linked to green skills. Our young people were really engaged in the discussion and with sustainability at the forefront of many young people’s minds it is incredibly important we share with the next generation the ways in which the built environment will be leading the charge on a greener world.
The second half of the day included all things employability, ensuring that our young people feel ready for their next steps into the world of work. Kicking off with an employability workshop, our young people increased their knowledge of the recruitment process, learning how to make their CV stand out to employers and the dos-and-don’ts of assessment centres!
Our young people where then able to put these skills into action, taking part in a mock interview and a number of team-based challenges to emulate a mock assessment centre. Many of our students had not taken part in these employment-based activities before, so this was a brilliant opportunity for them to gain feedback and learn how to conduct themselves in these nerve racking and new situations!
“I learnt a lot! It gave me a great understanding about Skanska as a Company. I really enjoyed taking part in the group activities, this allowed me to work with others and understand what an assessment centre could be like! Speaking to the professionals about their role and networking was also a great opportunity to find out more and show my interest in becoming an apprentice!”
Our young people left the day feeling inspired about their future careers with many immediately applying for Skanska’s opportunities. We are delighted that a number of our young people have been invited to interview and assessment centre stages and we are working with our young people to best prepare them for the opportunities.
