A fantastic day on site exploring trade careers through practical activities.
As part of the Year 11 coaching programme at Norwood School, generously supported by Mercers Company funded ‘Building Bridges to Construction Careers’ programme, our young people were so excited to step on site! Students started off their day with a careers networking session with the Claritas Site Management Team, understanding how a site works and the routes into managerial positions.
Next came the chance to work alongside trade professionals. The whole group have a keen interest in trade careers and meeting with a scaffolder and bricklayers had been a hotly anticipated opportunity! The students took a real interest in the different projects the industry professionals had worked on, including Buckingham Palace and sites abroad. Being able to meet a variety of skilled trades people opened up the breadth of career opportunities available to the students.
“I really liked meeting Duncan, he just really understood me, and I now really want to become a scaffolder!”- Student.
The volunteers took the students under their wing and showed the different trades in action, demonstrating their techniques and skills. Students were then able to have a go at laying bricks onto the building and checking that the scaffolding was secure and level. Having a go and putting their knowledge into practice was a fantastic opportunity for the young people, who really enjoy learning through doing and feel like they had made an impact!
“Nurturing young talent into the industry is extremely important, and Claritas is pleased to support our customers and organisations like the Construction Youth Trust in this endeavour. The recent visit at our site in Aytoun Road was an exemplary example of how valuable a view into the industry and hands on experience can be. The level of enthusiasm from the young people who attended the site was very rewarding!”- Jo Davis, Claritas.
Experiential opportunities are invaluable for young people who want to enter into a skilled trade, giving them first-hand experience of industry careers. The Year 11s are hoping to take part in the Trust’s Level 1 Health and Safety and CSCS card course this summer to kick start their careers in skilled trades!
