Plumbing students get a glimpse into their future career!

A group of Level 1 Plumbing students from New City College got a fantastic insight into the day-to-day realities of being a plumber onsite in an immersive taster day generously funded by the Portal Trust and hosted by Mount Anvil and Watkins!

The action packed day kicked off with a briefing that gave the students a taste of the importance of health & safety considerations on a live site, as well as the opportunity to ask questions to a young Watkins apprentice. Most of the students who attended are looking to secure an apprenticeship themselves in the future, so this was a great chance for them to meet a relatable role model in industry who is only a few steps ahead of them on his career journey, discovering more about the apprenticeship route and how the application process works.

Next was a live tour of Mount Anvil’s impressive Three Waters site! Working their way down from floor 19 of the building, our guide from Watkins explained how plumbing fits into the different stages of a build. Students were fascinated to see their Level 1 Plumbing learning come to life on a real project, witnessing how the individual processes they have been perfecting come together to complete a building.

In the afternoon, our young people had the opportunity to demonstrate their own skills during a fun and hands-on practical activity. Guided by experts in the field from Watkins, the budding plumbers split into two groups and worked to fix radiators and copper pipes to walls. Clearly motivated by the morning’s site visit, students listened carefully to the instructions they were given and showed real professionalism in getting the tasks done!

The chance to experience their chosen career in a professional environment was so exciting for our young people, who all finished the day feeling inspired. Students consolidated the learning they have been doing for their Level 1 Plumbing course as well as gaining so much new knowledge about a construction workplace. We have no doubt that they will be entering their Level 2 course next year with new-found drive and enthusiasm!
