It was an emotional and exciting day at the Construction Youth Trust Training Centre last week, as 14 students from the Budding Builders course attended their graduation.
Having completed multi-skilled courses in the construction trades, the students aged between 16 – 26 were awarded their certificates by the Mayor of Southwark Dora Dixon-Fyle.
Along with many friends and family of the students, the event was attended by local stakeholders including Southwark council members, members of the industry such as Grosvenor and their supply chain, educators, referral agencies, employment agencies, those working in housing associations and other local community groups.
Having opened in April 2015, the Construction Youth Trust Training Centre in Bermondsey aims to support young people in Southwark to access training, education and employment opportunities in the construction industry. The training centre offers OCN accredited multi-skilled and trade-focused courses with an opportunity to complete Level 1 Health and Safety in Construction.
A highlight of the event was when Wendy Heller, Lead Trainer & Curriculum Manager, had an open discussion with a past student about her experience on a Construction Youth Trust course. Brooke Hills, 18, a local resident, said the following when asked about her experience on the course:
“I loved it. I liked it so much that if there was another course, I would have come down to do another one. The best bit was seeing the end product, seeing the wall – because obviously I’ve never built a wall in my life. I ended up building two walls – ½ brick wide stretcher bond wall and ½ brick wide stretcher bond wall, for which I used the Pythagoras theorem to set the right angles.”
Brooke has completed her Level 1 Bricklaying and Painting & Decorating, Level 1 Health & Safety. And is due to take her CSCS test with the Trust, which will allow her to go on-site. Later in the ceremony she was awarded with Student of the Year.
Towards the end of the ceremony, one of the students also presented gifts and a card to Trainer Wendy Heller, and Project Co-ordinator Nicola Mason, after which there wasn’t a dry eye in the house! All of the student’s appreciation goes to show the impact of the work that Construction Youth Trust continue to deliver in support of the local community.
The event culminated with a delicious BBQ in the sunshine, generously catered by local butchers Bell & Sons.
Wendy commented: "Today was a proud day for everyone at the Construction Youth Trust – it is testament to the course and determination of all the young people who study with us”
