Maria shares her journey into architecture

Recently, a student named Maria* attended our Budding Brunels course in partnership with Canary Wharf Contractors. Following the course, she was offered a work placement at Aros Architects. Below you can read Maria's blog about how the experience helped her not only improve her employability skills but also build up her confidence:

"I first heard about Construction Youth Trust when they delivered an assembly at my school regarding the range of career opportunities available within the construction industry. I decided to attend their 3-day Budding Brunels workshop as I thought it would be a great opportunity to widen my career horizons.

And it did! One of the most enjoyable things during these three days was experiencing a real workplace by visiting the Canary Wharf Contractors development of Southbank Place in Waterloo as well as the impressive marketing suite. We had the chance to network with industry professionals and learn more about the variety of job roles in the sector.

A few days after the course, Construction Youth Trust informed me I had secured a work placement at Aros Architects. I felt really privileged and happy to know I would be able to work with such a great architecture team.

During the work placement, I got involved in the design of a pavilion, where I had the chance to learn how to use new software such as SketchUp and InDesign. The team were very helpful, giving me advice on choosing the most appropriate scale for architectural models and I really enjoyed having the chance to discuss my project with experienced professionals. I also got the opportunity to attend meetings with suppliers, which gave me an insight into how different teams work together to plan a project.

I am looking forward to studying architecture after sixth form. This experience offered me the opportunity to acquire and develop new skills that will definitely help me with my career plan. I was not only able to strengthen my portfolio and understanding of the career I want to follow, but also build up my confidence and improve my communications skills. I really enjoyed it!"

We at the Trust were delighted to hear that Maria's work experience went so well. Here's what the employer itself had to say about her:

“Maria is a very bright student and we were delighted to have her with us for a week. She is so excited about architecture and willing to acquire new skills, that she would be a great talent for the industry. We want to wish her the very best for her future.” Aros Architects.

We are all very proud of Maria and were so glad to have played a part in her discovering a career aspiration. The Trust would like to thank Canary Wharf Contractors and Aros Architects for their continuing support, and looks forward to working with them more in the future.
