Finding innovative ways to deliver online!

We have delivered two online site visits to students at City of Westminster College with the support of our industry partners, giving our young people a truly immersive virtual experience of live construction sites!

We have not let the COVID-19 lockdowns prevent us from finding ways to engage our young people online. In collaboration with employer partners Wates and Sir Robert McAlpine, we have taken students in our Westminster hub on a virtual journey, discovering the realities of a construction site.

In an online walkthrough, Wates showed us around their Coombe Wood School in South Croydon with live commentary from professional volunteers! Throughout the tour, students discovered a range of site-based roles and were able to ask questions about the different careers they discovered along the way.

Sir Robert McAlpine used a mix of 3D photography imaging and animation technology to take students around a range of their London-based sites, with an informative live voiceover from Community Manager Bruce Nixon. Students were particularly inspired by a look into the Big Ben site – undergoing one of the most significant works in its history! The use of online models on the tour also gave students an insight into technology-based roles that use BIM, highlighting the vital role technology plays within the sector.

The two site visits gave our students an experience of construction sites that is as true to a face to face exploration as current UK restrictions allow. By using technology, and with the support of our partners in industry, we have ensured that our young people have not missed out on the opportunity to gain an insight into a construction workplace and the huge breadth of roles available in the sector.
