Designing a local shopping centre with the Develop, Design, Deliver Pilot!

15/12/2021 News

Through the Construction Youth Trust Careers Cluster project, funded by the Mayor of London and the European Social Fund, we have partnered with Landsec in Sedgehill Academy to help Year 13 students discover the incredible breadth of opportunities available within the construction and built environment sector and widen their career horizons.

Given the centre blueprint and original client brief, the students must work in teams to devise a plan on how they would redevelop a local shopping centre in Lewisham. Over the pilot sessions, students will develop their communication skills and self-confidence as they negotiate each other’s ideas and collaboratively achieve a final project design.

The programme is delivered in close collaboration with Landsec who play an integral part in the pilot delivery, including ensuring the additional support of their supply chain and SME partners. Our professional volunteers offer their experience to guide students through the processes of stakeholder management, collaborative working as a project team as well as IT design skills. At the end of the programme, students will present their project ideas to a panel of industry professionals, with an overall winning team announced. The skills learnt throughout this pilot are exactly the kinds of skills that will greatly aid their next steps along their career journey, whatever that may be!

Throughout the pilot, students were given the opportunity to work alongside a huge variety of industry professionals, highlighting the incredible teamwork needed to create a project design even before the construction work begins! By widening their professional networks, the students are given greater access to further industry opportunities supported by the Trust.

We have been extremely impressed with the motivation and dedication of the young people to the project. The pilot began at the end of the last academic year, with the COVID-19 pandemic forcing initial sessions to take place online. It has been a real joy to come together in person this year and watch the students present their final designs! Everyone's presentations were amazing and our Chief Executive loved coming down to see their projects come to life. Congratulations to everyone for your hard work and especially to the winning team and star student!

We have been delighted to partner with Construction Youth Trust to deliver a fun, inspiring and engaging careers programme for young people in Lewisham. At Landsec, our aim is to showcase exciting and accessible opportunities across the real estate sector to young people in our local communities. With the support of Construction Youth Trust, volunteers from Landsec and our partners have enjoyed meeting students in the borough as they work on their industry projects, helping them to learn more about a wide range of roles while building skills for their future careers. - Emily, Social Sustainability Manager at Landsec
