Over the past 3 months, we have been delighted to facilitate weeklong in-person work experience placements for 23 young people.
Our young people have explored a wide variety of construction and built environment careers supported by our incredible employer partners, including Core Five, Sir Robert McAlpine, Child Graddon Lewis, Weston Williamson, Morris and Co, Bouygues UK, Keltbray, Franklyn Shaw and Gallagher Group.
Many of the summer cohort were referred to us by their schools and whilst they had an interest in the construction industry most were unaware of the incredible breadth of roles available in the sector. The opportunity to spend a week in a construction workplace is one of the most impactful ways for a young person to discover the diverse range of opportunities available to them in industry and to uncover a career role best suited to their interests and skills.
As well as helping young people uncover ‘hidden’ careers, work experience placements can often lead to further opportunities. One of our young people spent the week working in Core Five’s Cultural Team where they got stuck into a diverse range of tasks, both practical and theoretical, that have equipped them with exciting new skills and opened up a whole host of new career opportunities. Whether it be producing area schedules, shadowing a surveyor, or even attending Core Five’s Sherwood Street site, these tangible experiences are invaluable when young people are making decisions about what they want to pursue as a future career.
“Overall, he was a pleasure to have in the office and demonstrated a good ability to adapt in various settings, making him an ideal candidate for a construction or business management role in the future’’ – Core Five Team
We were absolutely delighted to learn that Core Five were so impressed with the young man’s attitude throughout the week that they have offered him a paid work experience next year. One of our main aims at the Trust is to help young people expand their professional networks and access opportunities that previously they wouldn’t have been able to access.
“I also just want to say thanks, if it wasn't for you, I still wouldn't have any idea of what to do but because of the week with Core Five I now know I want to go into Quantity Surveying.” – Student
In Kent, Gallagher Group were inundated by so much praise from across the organisation following another young man’s placement that they had no option but to employ him! Gallagher Group will now be running their first ever Quantity Surveying Apprenticeship and were thrilled to have the opportunity to recruit in such an organic way. It can be hard for employers to reach out and recruit young people. Through our work at the Trust we want to help create opportunities that bring young people and employers together to open up pathways for the next generation of construction professionals!
At the end of a work experience week, it is always so wonderful to hear our young people reflect on each of their unique experiences.
“It was really practical, it was good to see the sites. I also learned a lot especially about site safety.” – Student
At the heart of our work, we aim to provide young people with the tools and experiences they need to achieve their greatest aspirations. With many of our summer work experience cohort leaving an excellent lasting impression on their placement providers, we are excited to continue supporting them in their futures.
