On the 27th March, the 2018 edition of the Introduction to Property Development programme came to a head, with two schools presenting their plans for the 21, Moorfields development to a panel of industry Dragons.
Now in its fifth year, the Introduction to Property Development programme sees Construction Youth Trust and LandSec partner to work with two teams of students from Westminster City School and Pimlico Academy. The programme aims to challenge students’ perception of the construction industry and introduce them to a variety of professional careers in the property development sector.
Seventeen Year 12 students from the two schools attended after-school workshops for eleven weeks and were guided by volunteers from LandSec, Wilkinson Eyre and Mace through four key areas of the sector; masterplanning, stakeholder engagement, finance and marketing. Students enjoyed tackling real challenges faced by the industry, visiting construction sites, meeting professionals working in different areas and gaining knowledge of the sector in order to build their own plan for LandSec’s 21, Moorfields site.
The last two weeks were focused on the students compiling all the lessons learned through the course and developing a full pitch for their own development to deliver to a panel of five industry experts, including the Development Director of the 21, Moorfields site.
Despite some technical difficulties when showing off the 3D design of their development, Pimlico Academy made it two in a row and now lead 3-2 overall. The judges were hugely impressed with both teams’ project plans, but also with students’ confidence in presenting in front of a large audience on topic they knew nothing about 11 weeks prior. Congratulations!
“The presentation was very fun and helped me improve my confidence.” Christian
“It’s quite fantastic to have to opportunity to present such a master plan and feel proud of what you’ve achieved.” Andrew
We are delighted we received such positive feedback from students, with 100% of them saying that they increased their knowledge of property development and the careers within the sector.
“The fifth year of the Introduction into Property Development programme was once again a big success inspiring students about the range of career opportunities within the property sector. The programme is a fantastic way for year 12 students to work alongside experts from Landsec and our partners.”
Ben Anderson, Community Manager at Landsec
We would like to congratulate both teams for what they have achieved and also thank Landsec for their continuing support.
