Michael was referred onto our Building Opportunities programme by Lewisham council. He was unemployed and looking to kickstart his career.
He had an interest in the construction industry with aspirations of becoming a project manager. However, with no CV, relevant work experience or knowledge of how to access opportunities, Michael was floundering.
“At first, I felt like I was in the dark and tentative about what I was going to do. I couldn’t thank my coach enough for showing me all the different routes and pathways into construction. It was amazing to have so much support.”
Michael’s coach supported him to identify routes into the industry that would suit his interests and ambitions, pinpointing the short- and long-term steps that would help him achieve his goals.
The first step was revising for a Level 1 Health and Safety Award and CSCS card, essential for progressing into an on-site role. With support from his coach, Michael passed first time, opening the door to an on-site career!
Next, Michael’s CYT coach helped him to develop a compelling CV and connected him to a work experience placement on a local Lewisham project - so he could build his confidence and showcase his skills to a potential employer. A hands-on learner, Michael particularly enjoyed working on site and refining his practical skills. He impressed the employer with his passion and willingness to learn.
As a result, Michael was offered a full-time apprenticeship with the company. The role will consist of multiple on-site responsibilities, giving him a great foundation to progress towards his long-term goal of becoming a project manager.
