Here are the finalists for the Construction Delivery category


Zeshan Afzal - BAM Construction

Zeshan is an Assistant Site Manager at BAM Construction based near Glasgow.  One of his proudest achievements was to become the youngest Member of Chartered Institute of Building ever in Scotland.  He is the Scottish Branch Chairman for CIOB Novus and has been involved with them from the start organising many inspirational events for young students and professionals throughout Scotland.  He is a STEM Ambassador and has been working within the local community on projects with schools to inspire young people about construction careers and providing work placements.

James Birchall - AECOM

James is an Engineer with AECOM based in Leeds.  He is most proud of his voluntary work with the charity Engineers for Overseas Development having spent two years as part of a team designing and fundraising to build a grain store for a women’s cooperative in Uganda. At AECOM he set up development and discussion meetings for those going for chartership with the ICE and CIWEM and created a shared resource on the AECOM server which is shared with his colleagues.  

Jack Chami - Willmott Dixon

Jack is a Trainee Building Manager for Willmott Dixon and is based in Bristol.  His proudest experience in his career was at the age of 20 working for a large subcontractor with 140 employees and became the youngest site foremen in the company’s employment.  He went on to run 3 projects with them.  He created and founded the “Willmott Dixon in Schools” programme – a programme which offers opportunities to secondary schools for work experience and the chance for pupils to gain industry knowledge from young professionals, in order to gain a better understanding of the professional roles available in the Construction industry.

Zoe Haigh - Hyder Consulting

Zoe is a Graduate OLE Engineer at Hyder Consulting and is based in West Yorkshire.  She has learnt processes and produced several design tools allowing her team to design OLE Structures and their foundations on the Rutherglen and Coatbridge Electrification scheme in Scotland.  Zoe achieved a First Class Masters Degree in Civil & Structural Engineering despite coping with a serious illness during her studies.  Zoe is a STEM Ambassador and an ICE Ambassador, and is looking to change the perception of engineering specifically amongst women.

Thomas Hyland - Balfour Beatty

Thomas is a Project Engineer for Balfour Beatty in Cumbria.  He recently won the Balfour Beatty National Apprentice Award.  Each year the JIB, JTL, ECA and Unite the Union give one apprentice from the UK the opportunity to work and live abroad. After an extensive selection process he was announced the winner and in November 2013 travelled to Australia for six weeks to explore the construction industry in Australia and investigate how it differs from the industry here in the UK.  Thomas is the lead STEM ambassador for his region and with the support of Balfour Beatty, has attended over 25 events speaking to 3,000 students.  He has also presented at the Balfour Beatty emerging talent induction for the last two years.

Grant Robson - GRAHAM Construction

Grant is a Senior Site Engineer for GRAHAM Construction in Earlston, Scotland.  Grant was awarded a scholarship and studied Construction Management and Engineering at University achieving a 2:1 despite dealing with dyslexia and dysgraphia. He now looks to be a role model for young people living with these difficulties.  Since Graduating, his proudest moment was the handover of the Aberdeen Aquatic Centre to his client in time for the Commonwealth Water Polo competition in 2014.  Due to his excellent standard of work he was offered the opportunity to be temporary site manager on a mini project at Seaton Towers Aberdeen.

Ashley Terron - Redrow Homes

Ashley is an Assistant Site Manager at Redrow Homes in Warrington.  His proudest moment to date is winning the Gold Medal at the 2013 Worldskills competition, where he represented the United Kingdom in the bricklaying discipline.  Last summer he was named in Her Majesty The Queen’s 2014 Birthday Honours List, after being recommended by the Rt Hon David Cameron PM, and awarded a British Empire Medal for ‘services to skills’. He is a member of the CITB Construction Ambassador scheme and is a trainer for Worldskills UK which involves passing on his knowledge to the next generation of bricklayers that will represent the UK in competitions.

Yasar Ugur - Berkeley Homes

Yasar is a Trainee Site Manager for Berkeley Homes in London.  While at college Yasar found himself becoming depressed and fell into gangs.  His confidence was at an all time low until his teacher recommended he become involved with an organisation called Street Elite.  Through this scheme Yasar found an employment opportunity with Berkeley Homes.  He has been able to learn a great deal on the job and courses his employer sends him on. He is extremely proud to have turned his life around.  In his role he has had the opportunity to work with and advise has a young person interested in construction, and looks to be a role model for young people who come from difficult backgrounds who want to get in the industry.
