I'd never really considered a job in construction but heard about Construction Youth Trust's Built2Work course while I was unemployed and injured and it gave me some serious food for thought. I was keen to have the opportunity to gain real work experience and new skills, especially as there was such a good variety of trades covered by the course, it included painting and decorating, tiling, plumbing and carpentry, as well as health and safety.
For my course we worked on two empty rundown properties in my local area for four weeks. It was good to feel like you were in a proper working environment and I was pleased that there were all different sorts of people there with different levels of experience.
After the course I realised I wanted to be a multi-skilled trader and Construction Youth Trust put me in touch with further training schemes so I could build on my experience. I'm currently in the middle of my Level 2 Building Life Qualification and I spend my time between college and working on site.
