Worshipful Company of Paviors Support Southwark's Budding Brunels

The Worshipful Company of Paviors have supported yet another Budding Brunels Plus with students in Southwark benefitting from the latest programme.

After a highly successful programme in Tower Hamlets, we were delighted to have 24 new students from City of London Academy and Charter School join the programme, with continued participation from Cambridge Heath Sixth Form.

The three day workshop took place at the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, London, where the students took part in interactive sessions with construction companies Balfour Beatty, Tarmac, Sir Robert McAlpine, McNicholas, Davis Langdon, and heard from varied and dynamic speakers representing each of the companies, as well as support from Construction Skills.

On day two of the workshop the students visited Land Securities and Canary Wharf Contractors site, 20 Fenchurch Street, as well as McAlpine's Milton Court site.

On the third day panel interviews took place with representatives of the companies resulting in nine lucky students receiving work experience placements with construction companies McAlpine, Tarmac, Lafarge, Balfour Beatty and Costain. The students carried out the work experience placements during their October half term.

The workshop was a real success and brought very positive feedback from the students who took part. When asked what they enjoyed the most from the workshops one student said:

'I enjoyed visiting the construction site and finding out and seeing all the components that go into making big projects such as 20 Fenchurch Street'.

Participating companies were also extremely positive about the programme and commented on the students' professionalism. Balfour Beatty Graduate Engineer, Lizzy, commented:

"It's always great to get involved with schemes like this, especially when the students are as enthusiastic as they were!"

The experience had an impact on their future career choices, with many stating that they would now be interested in looking into a career in the construction industry.
