Training opportunities in construction for lucky Southwark locals!

We are recruiting Southwark residents to take part in free construction skills courses at our local training facility on the Aylesbury Estate. The lucky young people will learn different construction skills at our fantastic training facility which was donated by Southwark Council. The disused office building has been used by the Trust since February 2013 and is an ideal space for young people to learn.

As part of the programme young people have been working on the space to transform it into a training and learning space by undertaking the plastering, wallpaapering, carpentry and painting needed. Theis has been an ideal opportunity for the participants to apply their newly learnt skills in a real environment and have something tangible to show for their efforsts which future trainees will benefit from. The space is large enough to contain 2 learning areas including a kitchen, studey rooms and break out area.

As well as practical skills participants take part in health and safety sessions in preparation for taking their CSCS health and safety test. Trainees also have the opportunity to work on their CVs and enhance their employability skills with Trust staff. Shawn Wiggins, Young Father Development Worker at Working with Men commented: "The Construction Youth Trust Southwark training centreis an excellent project that engages young people really well. The training centre gives the young people the chance to work hands on and the courses they offer are a good way for young people to learn new skills and increase their potential to achieve their goals." Young people who have taken part in the course so far are currently practising for their CSCS tests, one of which has passed his already and is going on to become a carpentry apprentice.

The next course to place place at the Southwark facility will be startgin in late January and the Trust is currently recruiting for participants aged between 16 and 30 to take part. The course will run 3 days a week for 5 weeks.
