Industry Interview: Sean Thomas - Civil Engineering Student

Who are you, and how does Construction Youth Trust know you?

I’m Sean Thomas, and I’m currently a student at the City of Westminster College studying a BTEC level 3 extended diploma in Civil Engineering. I know Construction Youth Trust because I completed the Budding Brunels course in October 2014.

Tell us a bit about the specific Budding Brunels project you came on?

I spent 3 days on the Budding Brunels course. The first day we spoke to professionals in the industry informing us of how they got to their position within the construction industry, giving us tips and advice on how to progress within the construction industry which was very helpful. On the second day we visited the Clarges site in Green Park. It was amazing to get the chance to see a construction site in real life as well as learning about how the contracted company, Laing O’Rourke, were planning to complete the project. On the third day we were interviewed by industry professionals from numerous companies, giving us an insight in to how a real interview would be.

Did you get a work placement through the Budding Brunels course?

I worked with a company called Carillion in Kensal Green on the Crossrail project, specifically with the Commercial team. I was given jobs in cross checking daily resource sheets and the organisation of invoices as well as working out costs of some of the products the company had bought for the project in the previous 15 months. I also had the chance to attend a meeting about how the project was progressing and where improvements needed to be made which was very engrossing. Overall my week with Carillion was very engaging and pressurised but I really dis enjoy it, as I was helping aid the construction project at hand as oppose to just doing a normal college week.

What happened next?

At the end of the week Carillion decided to offer me a part-time job to continue working on the Crossrail project in Kensal Green!
