Budding Builder Luke secures role at Trust head office!

Luke contacted the Trust after having trouble securing permanent work, and being unemployed for around 15 months.

He is now a full-time Maintenance Assistant at The Building Centre, where the Construction Youth Trust head office is based!

Luke took part in two Multi-Skills construction courses with our London team in Hackney and Southwark as part of our Budding Builders programme. Through these OCN accredited courses he went on two site visits with Anglo Holt in Hackney and Lend Lease at One the Elephant which gave him a real insight into health and safety and what it is like to work on a construction site.

After finishing the final course, Trust staff remained in contact with Luke and supported him by helping him to improve his CV, supported him through CSCS health and safety training, and paid for the test as well as the CSCS card once he had passed.

Shortly after, Luke secured an interview with The Building Centre where the Trust’s head office is based in London. He ran through practice questions with Trust staff and after learning valuable lessons from a previous unsuccessful interview elsewhere, he gained the confidence and knowledge he needed to secure the job as full-time Maintenance Assistant.

Luke has already learnt a great deal at work already and has been trying his hand at various disciplines such as plumbing, carpentry, carpet laying and painting and decorating. He said:

“Everyone in the building is friendly and welcoming, which I’m not used to. I enjoy being the jack of all trades so this is my dream job. I now have something to wake up to and look forward to.

“The job has made a difference outside of work as well. I have been helping my mum clear her debts and supporting her with money to get her back on track. I am going on holiday in August, which I haven’t been able to do before because I haven’t had enough money.”

John Bonning, Commercial Director at The Building Centre commented: “The Building Centre understands the importance of providing opportunities for young people.

We are pleased to support Construction Youth Trust, a fellow industry charity based at the Centre, and we are delighted to welcome Luke to our team.”

Luke is extremely happy in his new role and is excited for the future. We are very proud of the hard work and determination Luke has demonstrated through the two courses and in his new role now. We would like to thank The Building Centre for providing Luke with such valuable experience and a job which has given him and his family stability for the future.
