Inspiring people with convictions in Wales

Recently we delivered a construction course in partnership with Wates Residential South and the Cardiff Living team, one of the pilot projects of the ‘Clean Slate Cymru’ CITB funded BAM Nuttall project, which aims to support people with convictions gain access to employment opportunities in the construction industry.

The successful delivery of a construction project for the ARC Academy UK Training and Employment Construction Project took place early October in Wales

ARC Academy UK in partnership with Construction Youth Trust hosted a course for ex-offenders at their training centre in Rhondda Cynon Taff. The project was the first pilot of the BAM Nuttall CITB funded “Clean Slate Cymru” project that aims to delineate a clear pathway for ex-offenders into construction training and employment in Wales.

Budding Brunels in Partnership with Great Western Railway

We recently joined forces with GWR to deliver two Budding Brunels courses in South Wales with the aim of raising awareness of professional opportunities within the construction industry for young people.

Budding Brunels is an Open College Network London (OCN) accredited course that gives young people from a variety of backgrounds an insight into the Built Environment, and provides industry-led careers advice from professionals in the field.

Construction Youth Trust Wales win share of Tesco carrier bag charge fund

The Construction Youth Trust Wales team have recently won £8,000 from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

The supermarket teamed up with Groundwork on its Bags of Help initiative, which saw grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to environmental and greenspace projects.

Shoppers were invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant, with Construction Youth Trust as one of the groups on the shortlist.

Encouraging women into the maintenance trades

This week we launched the first free taster sessions for women interested in careers in building maintenance.

In partnership with Mears the first of these workshops were run in both Caerphilly and Nottingham with United Welsh and Nottingham City Homes. The aim was to provide a practical, inspiring and safe learning experience for women who wish to ‘have a go’ at a trade before deciding on whether to pursue a career in building maintenance.

Tesco Bags of Help Initiative

Construction Youth Trust calls out for votes to bag a share of a £12.5million carrier bag charge fund

Tesco has teamed up with Groundwork on its Bags of Help initiative in hundreds of regions across England and Wales. The scheme will see three community groups and projects in each of these regions awarded grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 – all raised from the 5p bag charge.

Our Budding Builders Community Garden project in Wales has been shortlisted for the public vote in stores from 26th Sept - 9th October.

We’re delighted to announce Carol Lynch has been appointed as our new Chief Executive Officer.

Carol brings a wealth of experience from both the voluntary sector and the construction industry and will help us to build on our success and help more young people build better futures.

Celebrating at the Senedd

We celebrated the success of the SMYF project yesterday at the Welsh Senedd at an event sponsored by Mark Drakeford AM, Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Local Government. Julie Morgan AM for Cardiff North spoke to the guests and Dusty Kennedy from the Youth Justice Board explained the value of the project to young people when their supervision has ended. He explained “it gives people somewhere to go…and we really appreciate the project. The system is working the best it’s ever worked”.
