Work placements

Work placements are planned activities that use a work context to develop knowledge, skills and understanding that will be useful in the world of work.

The most common examples of this are work experience and site visits:

  • Work experience is where a young person spends a fixed time with an employer to gain an insight into their industry and working life.

  • Site visits is where a young person visits a construction site getting the opportunity to actively engage with the industry.

Active learning in this way provides real benefits to the students:

  • Presenting the construction sector as an interesting and rewarding career inspiring students to follow the same path

  • Increased understanding of the complicated nature of construction projects, multi-agency teamwork and the vital communications between client, contractor and sub-contractor.

  • Creates an understanding of how construction shapes their surroundings.

  • Places the techniques and principles learnt in the classroom or workshop into a real context.

  • The knowledge that local construction businesses are investing time in them, can be particularly inspiring for young people.

  • Provides a vital advantage when seeking employment, by allowing the student to demonstrate their commitment to joining the industry.
