CYT Trustees

All of our trustees have strong links with the industry at a national and senior level. They are drawn from the spectrum of professions across the sector, reflecting the diverse opportunities that are available. Each is committed to using their extensive experience, contacts and senior positions in some of the industry's largest employing companies and bodies. 

Rod Bennion MRICS, Chairman

Rod is a chartered surveyor and former Chief Operating Officer of Wates and was a director of Skanska McNicholas plc.  He is Chairman of the National Merchant Buyers Society and Chairman of Home Group and  Chairman of St Christopher's Hospice in South London.  His skills and knowledge of the industry, his commitment to supporting young people is long standing and renowned.

Doug Barrat FRSA, Trustee

Doug is a former main Board Director of Ballast plc and is presently an independent development consultant. Previously he worked for Kier and the Walter Lawrence Group of Companies. Doug is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and is a member of the CBI (Confederation of British Industry) Council. He is also a Founding member of the CIC (Construction Industry Council) Partnering Taskforce.

Michael Brown BSc MSc FCIOB MCMI AIC FRSA, Trustee

Michael is Deputy Chief Executive of the CIOB. Previously Michael worked both in the construction industry and in higher education. Immediately prior to joining the staff of the CIOB, Michael was Head of the School of Construction Housing and Surveying at the Polytechnic of Central London.

David Bucknall, Trustee

From the early 1960's David led the transformation of Bucknall Austin from a small local Quantity Surveying Company into a successful Plc, providing Management Services in the Construction and Property Sector. 

He retired on the sale of Bucknall Austin to Citex in 1998 and took up a series of Non-Executive positions, returning in 2003 to head up the purchase of the business from administration.  He was part of the team leading the firm back into the marketplace - co-ordinated the merger with Rider Hunt and Levett and Bailey in 2007 to create the Rider Levett Bucknall Global Practice.

As an indication of real commitment to regeneration in the mid-80's, Bucknall Austin purchased a derelict 20,000 sq.ft. canal side factory in Scotland Street on the west side of Birmingham.  This was converted into open plan workspace.  The project won the RICS Regeneration Award and acted as a catalyst for the now burgeoning Convention Quarter. 

David has always encouraged Innovation and Best Practice.  He Chairs the Birmingham Community Foundation - a leading People Regeneration Charity.  He is also a member of the Birmingham Best Practice Club and a Board member of the West Midlands Centre for Constructing Excellence, the RICS Business Development Board and the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust Board.

Dr John Connaughton BSc PhD MRICS CEnv, Trustee

Dr John Connaughton joined the Trust as a Trustee in 2009 and is Head of Davis Langdon Management Consulting.  He joined Davis Langdon Management Consulting in 1985 and since then has played a leading role in the development of DLMC, the consulting arm of Davis Langdon, providing a range of management consulting and sustainability services to both public and private sector clients.  John also leads Sustainability in Davis Langdon, and is responsible for the development and delivery of the firm's Sustainability Services. 

John writes and lectures widely in the areas of construction management and procurement, client demand, and sustainability.  He chaired the Environment Committee of the UK Construction Industry Council, and was a founder member of the Board of the Movement for Innovation (M4I).  From 1999 to 2004 he was an independent Board member of Genesis Housing Group.  He is currently a member of the UK Green Building Council Task Force (Core Group) on the Code for Sustainable Buildings.

Norman Critchlow, Trustee & Honorary Treasurer

Norman Critchlow has enjoyed a long career at director level in the private sector with a number of senior finance and general management appointments, both in the UK and Overseas, including a period as the Chief Executive of a UK large construction services business.

Norman is now a consultant and is currently working as the Interim Finance Director for a multi-national construction company and a UK Government Development Agency. He is also a non-executive director at the Ashford and St. Peter's NHS Trust, a position Norman has held since 2005, and Chairs the Finance Committee.

He is a Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales and the Institute of Directors.

Martin Davis MA Cantab, Trustee

Martin has spent the majority of his career with EMCOR/ Drake & Scull, where he served as Commercial Director and Vice Chairman. He was a member of the Joint Contracts Tribunal and contributed to the Latham and Egan Reports. He was also a non-executive director of the Prisons Building Board.  Having been a member of the Movement for Innovation and then the Strategic Forum for Construction, he is now promoting integration and collaboration in the Industry in conjunction with leading insurers. He is a member of the Independent Dispute Avoidance Panel for the London 2012 Venues and Infrastructure, and is a visiting professor at Reading and Heriot-Watt universities.

Colin Fall, Trustee

Colin joined the Trust as a Trustee in 2009. Colin currently works as a consultant Quantity Surveyor. Previous to this he was a partner from the consultancy, Edmund Shipway.  Colin joined the practice in 1966 as a trainee within the business' Manchester office, and was promoted to partner in 1981.  Colin played a major part in the success of Edmund Shipway that saw it grow from one office in 1963 into a multi-disciplinary construction practice with clients in sectors such as education, retail, health-care, industrial and commercial with 8 UK offices and 4 overseas offices.

Richard Haryott BSc BSc FREng CEng FICE FIStructE Trustee

Richard is a Consultant to the Arup Group, having been a Director of the Group for some twenty years. He has extensive experience in the design and implementation of major projects around the world. He is also currently Chairman of The Ove Arup Foundation, a charity which seeks to advance knowledge and education in the built environment.

Richard Laudy LLB, Trustee

Richard, a qualified lawyer, began his career in dispute resolution. He later moved into the construction and engineering industry, dealing with advisory work and procurement strategies. He is currently the Construction Partner at Pinsent Masons, and has been with the firm since 1985.

Liz Male, FCIPR FCIB - Trustee

Before setting up her own company in 2001, Liz was an associate director at top 20 corporate communications and design agency Fishburn Hedges. Liz chairs CAPSIG, the Chartered Institute of Public Relations' Construction and Property Special Interest Group and also won the 2006 award for best use of PR in the construction industry for her team's work on TrustMark. She is a Fellow of both the CIPR and CIB, and a member of the IBP and MK50 Constructing Excellence groups.

Peter Marchant, Trustee

Peter is a Chartered Builder and Chartered Quantity Surveyor having spent over 35 years employed in the construction industry, becoming highly qualified and experienced. Starting as a trainee Estimator and Quantity Surveyor, he has progressed significantly to achieve senior roles. Duties have included responsibility for all Company-wide post contract activity (£45m/annum), as well as heading up estimating and precontract planning activities. Additional duties comprised support to company expansion, administration and appointment of staff. Additionally, Peter has been responsible for Health and Safety groupwide (£80m/annum) and has project managed company initiatives which have included introduction of a fully integrated computer software/hardware system across all departments, and upgrade of Integrated Quality, Environmental and Safety Management Systems to achieve ISO 9002, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and PAS 99.

Jane Nelson, Trustee

Jane joined the Trust as a Trustee in 2009.

Rob Oldham BEng MSc CEng MICE, Trustee

Rob is Senior Director of Development & Regeneration at CBRE (CB Richard Ellis). He is also a Member of the Institute of Management, the Institute of Directors, CoreNet and the British Council for Offices. 

Martin Scarth CEng MICE MCIOB, Trustee

Martin has spent a majority of his working life (40 years) with Kier Plc. He retired from the main Board of Directors at Kier in 2003 where he was Managing Director of Kier Regional for 11 years. Currently Martin has property interest in Northampton, the West Midlands.  He works tirelessly for the trust and accesses the MDs of the major contractors in the country in pursuit of job and training opportunities for our users.

John Taylor MBE MA MSc FCGI, Trustee

John is the former Director of the Building Crafts College. Prior to this he was Chief Executive of the British Urban Regeneration Association. John is a Cambridge civil engineering graduate and previously served for 30 years in the Royal Engineers. He was Chief Instructor of the Graduate-entry College of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and commanded the Army's Amphibious Engineer Regiment.

Alistair Voaden FRICS, Trustee

Alistair is a chartered surveyor and former Senior Partner of GVA Grimley and Chairman of GVA Worldwide from 1993-2000. He was the Founder Chairman of the Trident Housing Society from 1964-1969 and a Non- Executive Director of Maybrook Properties plc from 1970-1987. Alistair is also a Trustee of the Hampstead Wells and Camden Trust.

Andy Wates Bsc MBA, Trustee

Andy is a fourth generation owner of the Wates Group. He is also a Director of Wates Interiors.
